Vinton, Iowa was established in 1849 and was originally known as Northport. The town quickly grew out of the trade outpost where it started, as farmers and businessmen flocked to the area. By the late 1800s, retail stores and factories were established. By the early 1900s, the town had grown to a population of 5,000, a number that has been maintained by Vinton to this day. Additional growth was evident in the 1940s and 50s, with the opening of the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, and additional businesses, such as J.C. Penney, moving to the area. Following an economic downturn in the 1980s Vinton, IA has rebounded through the efforts of community projects and dedicated citizens. In addition to downtown revitalization, the community established parks, events, and recreational resources to attract visitors and residents alike.
The Vinton, IA Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of facilities and amenities. These include the Kiwanis Slashpad, Recreation Center, Skate & Activity Center, Miniature Golf Course, Vinton Community Swimming Pool, and many acres of parks, playgrounds, and trails. Celebration Park, a cornerstone of the community, is the location of community and private events. The Farmer’s Market is held in the park every Thursday from July to September. The Community Calendar displays upcoming events for a variety of ages.
